The Opportunity

Join our global team and play a pivotal role in building and maintaining the infrastructure that powers our innovative AI-first assessment solutions. This is more than just a job; it's an opportunity to contribute to a mission-driven company that's making a real difference in education. This hybrid role combines building and developing solutions to improve the platform plus supporting and maintaining the live system.

We run the AWS infrastructure behind Learnosity's assessment platform across five regions. Millions of learners sit assessments on it, mostly during school hours, so our peak load is somebody's exam and our outages are somebody's exam too. This is SRE work in the real sense: you will build and improve the platform and you will also carry it. If you want pure greenfield platform work with no operational responsibility, this is not that job.

If you want to sit in a ticket queue and never write code, it is not that job either.

The estate, so you know what you are walking into

AWS across EC2, ALB/NLB, VPC, IAM, RDS, ECS, Route53, CloudFront and SSM, built in CloudFormation and released as blue/green stack swaps. Configuration management in Salt. MariaDB and PostgreSQL on RDS at a size where query plans matter, plus Redshift behind a data warehouse pipeline. Datadog for metrics, monitors and SLOs, Graylog for logs with a cluster per region, incident.io for incidents. Tooling in Python with POSIX shell where shell is the right answer, CI in GitHub Actions.

A real amount of legacy under active migration, and platform services largely in PHP that you will read to find out why a request died. No Terraform and no Kubernetes. We also use AI agents against production telemetry as part of normal operations, reading logs, metrics, tickets and code during live investigations, and we expect you to improve that tooling rather than just consume it.

We need 5+ years running large-scale production systems with genuine ownership rather than escalation-only exposure, 3+ years building your own tooling at that scale, advanced Linux diagnosis on a live host, strong AWS, strong Python, and hands-on administration of large relational databases. That last one is core to the role, not a bonus. Comfort with legacy systems and migrations matters, because much of the value here is careful work on things you did not build.

Networking depth, database performance tuning and container experience are all welcome extras. On-call, straight answer: for your first year it is aligned to your working hours while you learn an estate that took the rest of us years to learn. After that you join the standard rotation of one week in four, 24/7, shared across a distributed team.

What You'll Do

• Build, Maintain and improve a modern, highly available, scalable, and secure cloud infrastructure on AWS to support our next generation of AI-powered products.
• Use AI tools to empower your productivity and make you more successful
• Optimize system performance, troubleshoot complex issues, and implement proactive monitoring solutions.
• Automate infrastructure deployments and operational tasks to improve efficiency and reliability.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration and delivery of our products.
• Contribute to the continuous improvement of our infrastructure and operational processes.

Requirements

• A proven track record of 5+ years managing large-scale production systems.
• At least 3+ years of experience developing solutions and improvements for large-scale systems.
• Experience working in a global, distributed team environment.
• Platform Engineering
• Strong proficiency in Python for scripting and automation tasks.
• Highly experienced with Docker and containerised applications and systems
• Proficiency in POSIX shell scripting, including skills in using awk, sed, grep, etc.
• Strong version control skills using Git.
• Experienced using GitHub Actions and Workflows
• Cloud Operations
• Advanced Linux skills including iptables, systemd, logging, application management, diagnosis, sysctl tweaking, etc.
• Strong experience with AWS services including EC2, ALB/NLB, VPCs, IAM, RDS, ECS, Route53, and CloudFront.
• Experience maintaining large-scale legacy systems and performing migrations.
• Experience with large-scale databases and database administration, ideally MariaDB & PostgreSQL on Amazon RDS
• Experienced with metrics/monitoring systems, ideally Datadog and CloudWatch.

Nice to Have

• Strong networking background, including understanding of TCP/IP and routing protocols
• Experience in optimising database performance and resolving performance issues.

Location & Working Style

This role is based in our Dublin office. We value the creativity, collaboration and stronger connections that come from working together in person, and expect employees in this role to work from the office at least two days each week.

This role includes participation in a shared on call roster once onboarding and training are complete. The roster is shared across the global CloudOps team, with the current rotation typically requiring one week on call every four to six weeks to support production systems outside normal working hours.
