About the role
Role Purpose
The Senior Platform Engineer – Control-M is responsible for the design, administration and operational support of enterprise workload automation services, ensuring that business-critical batch processes and data workflows are scheduled, monitored and executed reliably.
The role supports end-to-end workload automation across multiple technology platforms, contributes to platform reliability, security and resilience, and drives continuous improvement through automation and effective operational practices. It also provides limited first-line backup support to database administration colleagues.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, configure and maintain Control-M scheduling environments, establishing and applying scheduling standards and operational controls.
- Develop, test and implement job definitions, calendars, dependencies and workflows, ensuring the controlled promotion of scheduling changes across environments.
- Monitor batch processing and respond to scheduling failures, execution errors, alerts and service-impacting events, prioritising business-critical workloads.
- Investigate and resolve complex cross-platform issues involving jobs, applications, infrastructure and workflow dependencies.
- Support workload automation across Linux, Windows, databases, file transfers and enterprise applications.
- Implement and maintain operational controls, alerting mechanisms and escalation procedures.
- Contribute to platform upgrades, migrations, resilience improvements and ongoing lifecycle management.
- Develop scripts and automation to improve job management and operational efficiency, including repeatable deployment, validation and support activities.
- Maintain accurate technical documentation, scheduling standards, support procedures and operational runbooks.
- Participate in incident, problem and change management, supporting timely service restoration and sustainable issue resolution.
- Collaborate with application, database, infrastructure and service management teams to coordinate delivery and resolve cross-platform dependencies.
- Apply secure-by-design practices and support access control, security and audit requirements.
- Provide limited DBA backup support, including basic database health checks, first-line troubleshooting and simple corrective actions under the guidance of DBA colleagues.
Skills and Experience
- Practical experience designing, configuring, administering and supporting Control-M or an equivalent enterprise workload scheduling platform.
- Strong knowledge of job scheduling, dependencies, calendars, alerts and workload management, including the prioritisation of business-critical workloads.
- Experience supporting batch workloads across Windows, Linux and database environments.
- Strong troubleshooting and incident management skills, with the ability to investigate issues across application, infrastructure and scheduling dependencies.
- Familiarity with scripting and automation to support efficient and repeatable operational processes.
- Understanding of file transfer, application integration and data processing workflows.
- Knowledge of monitoring, logging, event correlation and operational reporting.
- Experience with high availability, disaster recovery and platform lifecycle management.
- Understanding of scheduling governance, testing and controlled change practices.
- Basic knowledge of database operations, SQL and routine database troubleshooting, sufficient to provide first-line backup support to DBA colleagues.
- Awareness of CI/CD and DevOps practices is advantageous.
- Strong understanding of platform reliability, security, resilience and operational excellence.
- Experience participating in incident, problem, change and lifecycle management.
- Experience coordinating the work of others or contributing to technical projects is desirable.
- Ability to document technical solutions clearly and communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Education and Professional Background
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience.
- Typically six to ten years of relevant experience, or demonstrable expertise appropriate to the seniority and scope of the role.
