Role Purpose

The Senior Platform Engineer – Control-M is responsible for the design, administration and operational support of enterprise workload automation services, ensuring that business-critical batch processes and data workflows are scheduled, monitored and executed reliably.

The role supports end-to-end workload automation across multiple technology platforms, contributes to platform reliability, security and resilience, and drives continuous improvement through automation and effective operational practices. It also provides limited first-line backup support to database administration colleagues.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, configure and maintain Control-M scheduling environments, establishing and applying scheduling standards and operational controls.
  • Develop, test and implement job definitions, calendars, dependencies and workflows, ensuring the controlled promotion of scheduling changes across environments.
  • Monitor batch processing and respond to scheduling failures, execution errors, alerts and service-impacting events, prioritising business-critical workloads.
  • Investigate and resolve complex cross-platform issues involving jobs, applications, infrastructure and workflow dependencies.
  • Support workload automation across Linux, Windows, databases, file transfers and enterprise applications.
  • Implement and maintain operational controls, alerting mechanisms and escalation procedures.
  • Contribute to platform upgrades, migrations, resilience improvements and ongoing lifecycle management.
  • Develop scripts and automation to improve job management and operational efficiency, including repeatable deployment, validation and support activities.
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation, scheduling standards, support procedures and operational runbooks.
  • Participate in incident, problem and change management, supporting timely service restoration and sustainable issue resolution.
  • Collaborate with application, database, infrastructure and service management teams to coordinate delivery and resolve cross-platform dependencies.
  • Apply secure-by-design practices and support access control, security and audit requirements.
  • Provide limited DBA backup support, including basic database health checks, first-line troubleshooting and simple corrective actions under the guidance of DBA colleagues.

Skills and Experience

  • Practical experience designing, configuring, administering and supporting Control-M or an equivalent enterprise workload scheduling platform.
  • Strong knowledge of job scheduling, dependencies, calendars, alerts and workload management, including the prioritisation of business-critical workloads.
  • Experience supporting batch workloads across Windows, Linux and database environments.
  • Strong troubleshooting and incident management skills, with the ability to investigate issues across application, infrastructure and scheduling dependencies.
  • Familiarity with scripting and automation to support efficient and repeatable operational processes.
  • Understanding of file transfer, application integration and data processing workflows.
  • Knowledge of monitoring, logging, event correlation and operational reporting.
  • Experience with high availability, disaster recovery and platform lifecycle management.
  • Understanding of scheduling governance, testing and controlled change practices.
  • Basic knowledge of database operations, SQL and routine database troubleshooting, sufficient to provide first-line backup support to DBA colleagues.
  • Awareness of CI/CD and DevOps practices is advantageous.
  • Strong understanding of platform reliability, security, resilience and operational excellence.
  • Experience participating in incident, problem, change and lifecycle management.
  • Experience coordinating the work of others or contributing to technical projects is desirable.
  • Ability to document technical solutions clearly and communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • A collaborative, improvement-focused and automation-oriented approach to engineering.
  • Commitment to continuous learning, professional development and relevant industry accreditations.

Education and Professional Background

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience.
  • Typically six to ten years of relevant experience, or demonstrable expertise appropriate to the seniority and scope of the role.
