عن الوظيفة
Teacher Tutors is hiring part-time Spanish tutors to join our team on a flexible basis. We're seeking educators with strong Spanish backgrounds to support high school students across all levels. This role is ideal for tutors who are confident across Spanish I through IV, honors, and AP Spanish (Language and Culture, and Literature and Culture), including support for heritage speakers, and who enjoy working one-on-one with students.
Our students range from those building foundational skills to those tackling honors and AP coursework. Sessions take place in students' homes, at the library, at our Livingston, NJ office, or online. Most of our clients prefer in-person tutoring, so we'd love tutors who are open to offering it. We match families to tutors based on your preferred travel radius—you tell us how far you're willing to drive, and we work within that.
Responsibilities
- Deliver one-on-one Spanish tutoring sessions tailored to each student's course, instructor's expectations, and learning goals.
- Plan lessons and prepare materials (vocabulary and grammar practice, reading and writing exercises, conversation and listening-comprehension practice, AP free-response and speaking-task drills, review guides, and structured exam-prep schedules as test dates approach).
- Build students' fluency across the core language domains—reading, writing, listening, and speaking (both interpersonal and presentational)—along with grammar (verb conjugation and tenses, the subjunctive mood, agreement), vocabulary, and cultural understanding, and their ability to move between these modes with confidence.
- Track progress across sessions and adjust pacing, materials, and difficulty based on what's working.
- Submit a short session note after each tutoring session and flag concerns to our Director early.
- Communicate clearly and warmly with parents.
- Contribute to our team's shared practice: share what's working, ask questions, and help us keep raising the bar.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Spanish, linguistics, Latin American studies, education, or a closely related field—OR demonstrated native/near-native Spanish fluency paired with relevant teaching or tutoring experience. Master's or PhD candidates are welcome.
- Demonstrated mastery of Spanish at the level(s) you'll be tutoring—high school Spanish I–IV, honors, and/or AP Spanish Language and Culture and AP Spanish Literature and Culture—with the ability to scale up to more advanced coursework.
- Tutoring, TA, or classroom teaching experience (formal or informal) with students at the relevant grade levels.
- Working familiarity with the relevant curriculum standards and exam frameworks (e.g., ACTFL proficiency guidelines, the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages, and the AP Spanish Language and Culture and AP Spanish Literature and Culture course and exam descriptions) and the areas where students most often struggle, such as the subjunctive, ser versus estar, preterite versus imperfect, gender and agreement, and speaking confidence.
- Strong communication skills and the patience to work with students who may arrive frustrated, anxious, or burned out after a rough test or assignment.
- Ability to plan individualized sessions and adapt in real time when a planned approach isn't landing, including explaining the same concept in multiple ways until it clicks.
- Availability for afternoon, evening, or weekend hours during the school year, with extra capacity around exam season and finals.
- Comfort with educational technology.
- Reliable transportation and a valid driver's license for in-home sessions.
Preferred
- A track record of strong outcomes with Spanish students at the levels you will be tutoring (e.g., grade improvement, AP score gains).
- Background or experience that allows you to support advanced or specialized coursework, such as AP Spanish Literature and Culture or support for heritage and native speakers.
- Familiarity with the major textbooks and curricula commonly used in these courses, so you can meet students inside the framework their teacher is using.
- Real-world or cultural experience—time living, studying, or working in a Spanish-speaking country, or deep familiarity with the literature and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world—that helps you bring the language to life.
- Ability to support additional world languages (e.g., French, Italian, Mandarin) common in the communities we serve.
Compensation & employment status
- Pay range: $40 - $50/hour, based on degree and experience
- W-2 (default): Most part-time tutors join as W-2 employees. Teacher Tutors handles payroll, taxes, and provides liability coverage during sessions.
- 1099 (optional): Tutors who prefer 1099 contractor status are welcome, provided they carry their own professional liability insurance and operate through a registered LLC. Documentation will be requested during onboarding.
