Job Description

AECOM is hiring an Experienced Senior Project Architect for our Arlington Va / Washington DC Buildings + Places practice.

The Buildings + Places practice at AECOM is seeking an experienced Senior Architect to lead technical execution, constructability, and project delivery across its diverse portfolio. The position requires leading design teams, managing client relationships, and overseeing construction projects from concept through completion. Key responsibilities include preparing technical documents, directing project coordination, and ensuring code compliance.

This professional will manage comprehensive construction documents, integrate multidisciplinary engineering inputs, support rigorous QA/QC, ensure constructability, and minimize field change orders. Blending building envelope expertise with strong industry knowledge, the role safeguards technical quality from schematic design through final site closeout.

Additionally, the candidate will act as a vital mentor, providing essential code coaching, detailing guidance, and technical development to developing designers and job captains.

This role will be responsible for the following items

  • Develops technical solutions to a wide range of programmatic requirements and supports technical development of contract drawings during all design phases.
  • Provide technical assistance and mentoring to support the development staff and studio growth. Provide designs, sketches, diagrams, schematics and working drawings to illustrate technical design solutions to a wide range of programmatic requirements.
  • Protecting design intent through documentation and construction.
  • Participating in design reviews / technical design reviews.
  • Helping establish office-wide standards for detailing, constructability, and technical quality.
  • Mentoring staff to understand the relationship between design decisions and technical execution.
  • Prepare specifications, reports, and related data tables.
  • Lead, coordinate, cross-check, and integrate technical inputs from structural, MEP, civil, and landscape engineering consultants.
  • Incorporate Sustainability, embed energy performance, sustainable material selection, and Sustainable project requirements directly into technical drawings.
  • Work closely with the Design Team and Project Manager, independently preparing and presenting design solutions to clients.
  • Manage CA Workflows and oversee the processing of Requests for Information (RFIs), shop drawings, and product material submittals.
  • Conduct Field Observations by performing site inspections to verify that construction work aligns with contract documents and design quality standards.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in architecture or a related field + 8 years of relevant experience in an architectural firm, with a strong emphasis on technical delivery and construction administration or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
  • Registered Architect (RA) license.
  • Experience in AutoCAD, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience preparing/writing specifications.
  • Ability to obtain US Government Security Clearance.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required due to the nature of the work.
  • Experience in Revit.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 10+ years of relevant experience is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • LEED Accreditation, LEED AP BD+C credentials is a plus.
